Search & visibility

Helping search engines understand a website as a whole, and helping local customers find a business in the places it serves.

The problem

The business offers services people clearly search for, yet the website rarely appears for them. Pages may be hard for search engines to crawl, service pages may be thin or overlapping, and nothing connects them in a clear structure. For businesses that serve particular towns, local results show competitors while the business's own details are inconsistent across directories. It is hard to tell whether the problem is the site, the local signals or both.

The outcome

The intended result is a website that search engines and AI answer engines can read accurately, and local information that is consistent wherever the business is listed. Progress is measured through Search Console and local performance data, with no guaranteed positions — search engines alone decide rankings.

The services, and what each one does here

  1. Illustrative local search results for a fictional pet clinic: a drawn street map with three pins next to a list of three nearby clinics, with the featured clinic highlighted with its rating, hours, distance and Directions, Call and Website buttons, plus a citation checklist confirming the business name, address and phone match across directories.

    Local SEO

Adds local organic visibility for searches that combine a service with a place, including location pages where legitimate and consistent business information. Choose it when customers search for you together with a town or "near me".

How they work together

Site-wide and local signals together

  • Site structure supports local pages

Local SEO relies on the technical and structural work of SEO. Location pages perform better when the site is crawlable, the service pages are clear and internal links connect each place to the services offered there.

  • Consistent business information

The name, address, phone number and service areas on the website match what appears in directories and on the Google Business Profile, so search engines see one consistent business.

  • Business Profile is a separate service

Local SEO includes optimizing the Google Business Profile as one local signal. Creating, verifying and administering the profile day to day is handled by Google Business Profile Setup & Management, a Business Solutions service.

  • Measured in the same place

Search Console, site analytics and local performance data are reviewed together, so it is clear whether changes in visibility come from site-wide or local work.

  1. SEO makes the website technically sound and clearly structured, so search engines can crawl and understand every service page.
  2. Local SEO adds local intent to that website through location pages where legitimate and connected internal links.
  3. Local SEO also keeps business information consistent across directories and the Google Business Profile, whose day-to-day management is a separate service.
  4. Search engines combine the website and those listings when deciding what to show in organic and local results.

Choosing

Which do you need?

Many projects use more than one of these. If the situation doesn't fit neatly, describe it and we'll suggest where to start.

Ask which fits
SEO or Local SEO?
If customers find you by searching for a service regardless of location, or the site has structural or technical problems, start with SEO. If customers search for the service together with a town or "near me", and you genuinely serve those places, Local SEO adds the local signals. Many local businesses need both, with SEO as the base.
Is Local SEO the same as managing our Google Business Profile?
No. Local SEO is about local organic visibility across the website, listings and the profile. If the profile itself needs creating, verifying, reorganizing or regular upkeep, that is Google Business Profile Setup & Management, which works alongside Local SEO.
Should search visibility wait until after a redesign?
If a redesign is planned, SEO considerations belong inside it — especially the redirect map — so existing visibility is carried forward. Ongoing search work then continues on the new site.
